Neighborhoods to Visit in Portland Oregon

the best neighborhoods in Portland Oregon to explore

For first-time visitors, there are many diverse places to visit in Portland, Oregon. Most tourists will congregate downtown, where most of the hotels are found. However, after the protests in 2020, much of downtown is currently deserted and the city is working hard to restore and revitalize the neighborhood. When we visited, we stayed downtown at the Duniway Hotel, a Hilton property. While we enjoyed the hotel and central location, it was clear the area was home to many homeless and most of the shops had closed their doors.

As such, over the weeks I spent in Portland, I got the chance to explore many different neighborhoods in the city, each with a unique culture. Here’s a guide to some of the best neighborhoods to visit in Portland.

Pearl District

Once an industrial area, the Pearl District has transformed into a vibrant neighborhood with art galleries and trendy restaurants. Be sure to check out Powell’s City of Books, the largest independent bookstore in the world. Head to the Pearl Room to see their rare book collection.

Nob Hill

The Pearl District melds into Nob Hill and the famous NW 23rd Avenue. The Northwest District (Nob Hill) offers tree-lined streets with Victorian-style homes. NW 23rd Avenue offers high-end boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Stop at Salt & Straw for a scoop of their uniquely flavored ice cream. If you are feeling more outdoorsy, venture to Forest Park located on the western edge of the neighborhood. It’s one of the largest urban forests in the U.S. and provides numerous trails.

Multnomah Village

One of the lessor-known gems worth exploring is Multnomah Village. Known as Portland’s “Village in the Heart of the City,” Multnomah Village offers a charming, small-town feel. With its tree-lined streets, artisan shops and locally owned cafes, it’s a great spot for a quiet afternoon. The Multnomah Arts Center also hosts local art exhibitions, classes and community events. Have a beer on the patio of John’s Marketplace. Thai Herbs restaurant offers authentic Thai dishes and Marco’s Café is a local favorite for brunch.

Lake Oswego

Just south of Portland, Lake Oswego is a beautiful suburban town centered around the stunning Oswego Lake. It offers a more upscale, bougie vibe with plenty of high-end shopping and fine dining. You can take a leisurely walk around George Rogers Park or sit on the patio at St. Honore Bakery. This area also has a Salt & Straw Ice Cream Shop and Breakside Brewery. Millennium Plaza Park offers great views of the lake with a reflecting pool and dog-friendly greens.

Mississippi/Williams

Take a stroll down Mississippi Avenue for a blend of the old and new Portland. The street is lined with vintage shops, craft breweries and food trucks. I really enjoyed Paxton Gate, a unique boutique specializing in taxidermy, insects, science kits and fossils. Starting from Por Que No? taco shop, you can walk north until Mississippi Marketplace – a great food truck pod offering ribs, various international cuisines and a beer stand.

Beaumont Village

Located in Northeast Portland, Beaumont Village is a quieter, quaint neighborhood. Head to Fremont Street for a stroll, stopping for a coffee at Grand Central Bakery or one of the many family-run restaurants. My favorite spot is Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai where you can select a plate of mini donuts and different chai teas made in house. If you are looking for solace, wander through the Japanese Cemetery.

Portland’s neighborhoods offer something for everyone. Each area has its own personality and local charm. There are so many places to visit in Portland, but I hope you add a few of these neighborhoods to your trip.
