Unique Things to Do in Asheville NC

Asheville, North Carolina, is known for its vibrant arts scene, access to the Blue Ridge Mountains and granola vibes. Here are some unique things to do in Asheville, NC on your next visit:

unique things to do in asheville north carolina: a guide to the best activities for your next trip

Sip Cocktails at the Antidote

While Asheville is largely known as a brewmaster’s paradise, Antidote mixes craft cocktails in a turn-of-the-century setting. The three-story building offers rooftop seating, outdoor patio seating and comfy lounge sofas for you to sip your eclectic drinks from another time. The bartenders are dressed in Prohibition era attire and expertly mix your cocktail. No reservations, so first come, first served.

Explore Chimney Rock Park

Spend the day at Chimney Rock State Park, a nature lover’s paradise with spectacular views and incredible hiking trails. Bring a picnic and take the elevator to the Chimney Rock viewpoint.  If you are looking for an easy hike, take the Hickory Nut Falls Trail – a 1.5-mile roundtrip trail that leads to the bottom of a 404-foot waterfall. The wide trail does have some small inclines and rocky terrain, but it also boasts great tree coverage, making it a good activity for a little shade in the hot summers. You can access the trail via the stairs from the main parking lot or from the road (though there is no parking area).

Discover Local Artists at the Marquee

Located in the River Arts District, the Marquee is Asheville’s largest market for the bold, creative and unexpected. This large, open space offers independent artisan stalls, filled with artwork, vintage clothing and furniture and handmade jewelry. The Marquee even offers a small bar at the main entrance for you to grab a craft beer or cocktail before wandering the space. It’s open to the public every day from 11 am to 6 pm. Take advantage of this great location and explore more of the River Arts District, including my favorite brewery – the Wedge. There is ample parking; explore working studios and art galleries in several areas along the riverside. Map here for more information.

Find your Zen on an Outdoor Waterfall Yoga Hike

Enjoy an easy 2-3 mile hike through Dupont Forest, home to 6 magical waterwalls and several gorgeous overlooks. Find your Zen with a rejuvenating yoga flow in front of a waterfall. Afterwards, cool off by dipping your toes in the refreshing pool at the base of the falls before leisurely hiking back to the parking area. This tour includes the guided hike, all-levels one hour yoga session and yoga mat.

Visit the Biltmore Estate

I’d be remiss not to mention Asheville’s grandest destination. The largest privately owned home in the U.S., the Biltmore Estate offers tours of the mansion, its gardens and the winery. You can also explore the estate’s hiking trails and special exhibits. There are seasonal wine tastings and a beautiful Christmas lights display. Tickets aren’t cheap, so plan to spend the full day to maximize your visit and take full advantage. The Biltmore Village, just outside the estate, is filled with boutique shopping and restaurants. My favorite stop is Well Bred for their gigantic eclairs!

Kayak down French Broad River

Enjoy an afternoon along the French Broad River with this semi-private kayak trip lead by a naturalist. You will pass by local attractions, including the Biltmore Estate on this 5-mile, 90-minute journey and get a unique perspective of Asheville from the water. The tour is limited to 5 travelers and all equipment is provided.  If you want a self-guided tour, check out this option.

Explore a Local Farm

Depending on the time of year, visit Cloud 9 Farm just southeast of Asheville for blueberry or strawberry picking or cut-your-own flower arrangements. Their working farm offers honey and fresh produce for sale. You can even enjoy the walking trails or stay in the cabin. It’s a great way to get outside of the city and enjoy a spot of nature.

Enjoy Rooftop Views at Sunset

Asheville has no shortage of rooftop bars downtown, but my favorite is The Montford at the DoubleTree Hilton. They are the only rooftop with unobstructed views of the Blue Ridge mountains. I love the large open air seating design. They offer small bites and craft cocktails. Reservations are recommended, but they do accept walk-ins.

These unique activities showcase the eclectic, artistic and natural beauty of Asheville, making it a great destination for visitors. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures, arts and culture or just relaxing, Asheville offers a great blend of activities. You will be sure to find something to do!
